In advance of President Trump’s State of the Union address tonight, our sister organization, the Voter Participation Center, released the following statement from founder and President Page Gardner:
“Today, as President Trump addresses the American public, the Rising American Electorate (RAE) is listening. Now comprising 62 percent of the voting-eligible public, this demographic – made up of unmarried women, young people, and communities of color – will play an important role in deciding the 2020 elections and determining Trump’s chances at re-election. The RAE is paying close attention to the president’s policies on issues that disproportionately impact them, including income inequality, access to health care, student loans and housing affordability. But the biggest question is whether Trump will start listening to the majority of Americans, or if he will continue to let the wealthiest thrive at the expense of the rest.
“The president should also address the violations of voting rights across the country during the 2018 midterm elections and the continued discrimination in our elections. From Texas to North Carolina to Georgia, there are far too many barriers to casting a ballot. Whether the president chooses to acknowledge these issues or not, Stacey Abrams will offer an important perspective in the Democratic response, which will ensure our entire nation knows what really occurred.”
